Worldwide brainstorming

2 kwietnia, 2015 by Ignacy Trzewiczek Jeden komentarz

Most of you know Citadels by Bruno Faidutti, old classic game that so many gamers love. Brilliant character selection rules that let us bluff, outsmart opponents and what is most important – have lots of laught. Not all of you know that actually this brilliant piece of mechanism was invented few years earlier by Marcel-André Casasola Merkle and introduced in a small card game called Verrater.

So many of you love Battlestar Galactica. Released in 2008 was a blast right from the very first day. It’s been a while since the first print and yet the game is alive, the game is played over and over, every week I see it when I look through my Instagram feed. Gamers love this great game of betrayal and hidden agendas. I am eager to know how many players who enjoy Battlestar Galactica know that actually traitor mechanism was invented three years earlier by Bruno Cathalha and Serge Laget in 2005. The game is called Shadows over Camelot and was first coop game that introduced traitor mechanism.

Two or three years ago Francis Drake got a tremendous buzz among US players. So many reviewers where pointing how cool the port mechanism is and how great choices it delivers. Invented by group of Italian designers, introduced to European players in 2009. Called Egizia. Super elegant and smart, very popular in Poland eurogame.

Unlike in any other industries, board game industry is friendly place. It’s not only friendly in terms of social aspect, in terms of us being kind to each other, us inviting new people to the table and being welcome to other people. It is friendly also on this other level, on the level of creation. Nor Marcel-Andre Casasole sued Faidutti. Cathalha did not sue Konieczka… There is no patent war. In a fact, there is quite the opposite. There is ongoing brainstorming, ongoing process of creativity, process of taking great ideas from other designers and creating something new. Adding value to our hobby. There is no stealing. There is adding. Improving. Developing. Worldwide brainstorming.

That’s why board games get better.
That’s why we see better and better games each year.
It’s a community of designers using each other ideas to bring more value.

I wish it’s true for other industries and other aspects of our life. We give great example to the world.

It’s 2015 for crying out loud.

16 marca, 2015 by Ignacy Trzewiczek Brak komentarzy

It just happened. We don’t know when it happened, but it certainly happened and there is no way to change this. Smart phones are part of our life. Like crazy we make and post photos, we share our emotions, we announce on Facebook or Twitter that we are happy or angry.

You are having a great time? Bum! Make a selfie with friends and post on Instagram.

You just won few bucks in a casino? Bum! Let all your firends on FB know that!

Having awesome dinner? Photo of meal is on your Instagram!

And so on, and so on. We share our happy moments like crazy. I like it. I do it a lot.

But…

Even if I eat a great dinner at Bally’s Las Vegas, I won’t post it on my Instagram.

Even if I win 1000 usd at Bally’s Las Vegas casino, I won’t post it on Twitter.

Even if I have a great time with friends at Bally’s Las Vegas, I won’t mention it on Facebook.

I won’t do this because Bally’s Las Vegas has no free wi-fi for guests.

Instead of posting positive emotions, instead of showing everybody that I have a great time at Ballly’s and my friends should come over here and have a great time too, I’ll do something else. I’ll pay for Internet access and I write this hate post.

I am super disappointed. I wanted to share with my friends and followers awesomeness of Gama Trade Show. Bally’s made it hard.

Hey, Bally’s! Wake up!! It’s 2015 for crying out loud! I need Internet access to praise you or… #IHateBallysVegas

Portal Games tour 2015 begins

23 lutego, 2015 by Ignacy Trzewiczek Brak komentarzy

Haugesund_webHaugesund is a small municipality, only 73 km². The population is 34,619, giving the municipality a population density of 509 people per km².

The town is situated on a strategically important sound through which ships could pass without traversing heavy seas. In the early years the coastal waters off Haugesund were a huge source of herring, and the town grew accordingly. Despite being barely a village back then, King Harald Fairhair lived at Avaldsnes, very close to…

OK, let’s face it. I never heard about Haugesund and I don’t know anything about this city. And yet, I am about to go there this week!

***

It all began at Essen 2014. Bunch of cool guys from Norway gave me a tshirt with their club logo and took a picture with me. I was recognizing them from previous years, this was bunch of loyal gamers who were  visiting Portal Games every year.

They told me they do convention in Norway and that would be cool if I visit them some day.

'When is it organized?’ I asked.

'February’ they said.

'You must be kidding me! Norway in February? Do I look like a fan of freezing temperatures?’ I replied.

'It’s called MidWinter con. But trust us, it’s not that cold in Norway in February!’

I was rolling with laughter.

'Guys we stay in touch, but chances that I’ll come are low. Just like temperatures in Norway in February.’ I said.

***

And here we are 3 months later – tomorrow I have flight to Haugesund. Flight is on 6 AM, I will have to get up 2 AM to get to airport. Doesn’t sound like fun. Low temperatures in Norway doesn’t sound like fun neither.

And yet, I am going to Haugesund.

Super cool gamers convinced me that this will be hell of a fun weekend. Believe it or not, I am sure, they are right. It’s gonna be fun. Norway, I am coming!

It’s about having fun, right?

30 stycznia, 2015 by Ignacy Trzewiczek Brak komentarzy

Portal Games is a company and as you guys know I am CEO of this company. I do business and I try to become billionaire. But besides that, besides trying to make huge money every day, I am trying to have fun. And I have to admit that this part about having fun is much more successful so far.

So once a while I try to make jokes, mock players whom I like (and know that they have sense of humor and won’t feel  offended). Like yesterday, when I was making fun of Tony from Rolling Dice and Taking Names who said that he sold his copy of Robinson Crusoe, because the game was all about problems with food, with wood, with wounds and beasts and that there is no moment of break from overhelming despair. So I designed a card for him.

Hello Tony! I don’t now how you’ll do it, but you better undone that deal… @DiceAndNames #episode57 pic.twitter.com/azvSgaO3or

I mention this as an introduction to the joke I made to Willie Hung at BGG.con 2014. And since Willie mentioned this in his yesterday’s blog post I think it is a great moment to read about his adventures with Portal Games and him dealing with me…

  • First part of the story
  • Second part of the story
  • Third part… ok, there is no third part. But you never know, you know… Maybe someday… 😉

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

I strongly believe that good board game is the one that tells a good story. You play it and suddenly you are sucked into it, you feel chills on the skin. Emotions grow. In a moment you defend castle. You hear roar of warriors. You smell boiling oil. You are into it. That's how I design my games. I always want to tell a good story. I want players to be into it. As deep as possible.
