Handicap!

14 stycznia, 2014 by Ignacy Trzewiczek Brak komentarzy

Ancient game go has a handicap rule. Player who has smaller experience begins the game with few his stones already on board, set in the exactly chosen spots. That way he has an advantage at the beginning and will be able to play tight match against better player. Simple and brilliant.

Better player doesn’t need to fake that he is doing his best. Better player doesn’t have  to play with 50% of determination. Better player doesn’t accidentally make mistakes. He is doing all his best to get the opponent, who began with better position. Go teaches us to respect the enemy, respect the game and respect engagement.

*

I use handicap rule for all different games when I play with my children. I give them starting bonus, some advantage and then no mercy. I give my best. I struggle with them and I am serious. I show them my determination, my will to win, I show them how with a good moves I can do better in the game.

I teach them how to play better but what is more, I teach them right attitude – when you play, play your best. You own this to your opponent. This is showing respect.

I do my best when I play with kids. I can do this because handicap.

*

When I play X-Wing with my son, we play without handicap. Every time he kicks my ass, this  is because he was better. And he knows it. This is pure satisfaction for him. He knows he won, because he was better. He knows I never fake when I play. I was teaching him that for years.

And you know, even though I loose, I am damn happy. It is so cool when your son kicks your ass. He is better. And in these moments I am proud daddy.

Wanna bet?

13 stycznia, 2014 by Ignacy Trzewiczek 2 komentarze

When I was a kid,my father said to me: from among two persons who make a bet one is a dick and the other is moron. The first guy knows he is right and he takes advantage from it. The other is just a moron wishing he is lucky and is right. Obviously he is not.

In December 2012 I was running demo games of Robinson at Pionek convention. It was long time ago. Before Robinson got these all great reviews. Before it got licensed to Germany, Italy, Russia, China or Korea. Before he got awards and nominations…

What is more, at that time I was in the middle of hell – at Polish game forums dozen of haters attacked me with a strength and hatred I have never seen before. It was so brutal and personal, that admins of game forum decided to react and kick some asses. Yeah, Polish release of Robinson was very sad time for me.

At that Pionek convention, devastated by Internet haters I was still struggling for success of Robinson and running demos of Robinson, all two days, from dusk till night. One of players who decided to try was my friend Klema. He played, then he came to me, hug me like bear and with very serious voice he said to me: 'It will make top 20 at BGG. Congratulations.’

At this time it sounded like the dumbest thing on Earth. The very very dumbest thing. The dumbest. If he ask me back then: 'Want a bet?’ I would bet with 10 000 $ that he is not right. I would bet without a blink.

From among those two who would make a bet, I would be the moron. Today Robinson make it to Top20 at BGG.

This is unbelievable, but this is true. I can’t believe this is real…

I can’t explain it reasonably. Sorry. I am moron. I know.

Don’t trust testers!

10 stycznia, 2014 by Ignacy Trzewiczek 6 komentarzy

Walec was testing Robinson with me for a couple of months. He joined us early Spring 2012 and played during Spring and Summer months. After each test game he was telling me that game is good, and better and better. He was lying right in my face. Just like all 99% of other testers. He was telling that there are emotions, choices, lots of action. If I only listened to him…

But I didn’t.

I was trashing cards, and rules and changing and changing and did not listen assurances of playtesters that game is OK. I knew they had no guts to tell me right into my eyes that the game I want to release for Essen sucks.

Designer presenting his prototype is like young mother with her little boy. Do you really believe there is anybody on this planet who will tell her that her sweet child is fat, bold and a squint eyes? With playtesters is the same. Prototype is boring, chaotic, nothing really super cool, but still they pat you on the back and say: 'It’s OK!’

Bullshit.

***

In the middle of July 2012, after one of the very last test games of Robinson Walec decided to be honest. He said:

'It was freakin’ amazing. When we played before to be honest, I didn’t like it. It was rather boring every time. I mean, just a game. But today! Today it was extraordinary. I am so excited!’

Yeah…

I know, you moron! – I said in my thoughts – It’s July! Now I finished working on that game and now it is good. Now! And I know you feel excited. And I know you were lying for the past 6 months!

***

This week I playtested with Walec our new project. Few weeks ago we discussed few different variants and now it is a time to check them all. Walec came with his prototype, set up it on the table, explained rules and we began to play. It took about 40 minutes.

'I can’t produce it that way.’ I said. 'We would need to change components…’

'Damn it. I don’t know what to say.’

'Say nothing. This prototype sucks and it goes to trash anyway. First of all [and I explained one reason]. Second of all [and I explained second reason]. Third of all [and I explained third reason].’

In 3 minutes I destroyed his day and trashed 3 weeks of his work.

I did not hesitate for a second.

***

Play testing is not a tea party at your aunt. This is trashing bad ideas and seeking for good ones. This is not time for being a nice guy.

I hope Walec is pissed off now. I hope he is seeking for revenge. I hope that when I show him one of my prototypes I will no longer hear his damn 'It is OK’. I hope that with pure satisfaction he will trash my poor ideas.

I hope I finally have a tester, I can trust.

And you, dear designers? Remember – don’t trust testers.

Witcher: adventure game

9 stycznia, 2014 by Ignacy Trzewiczek 7 komentarzy

First pics of the game came from Gamescon, where CDProjekt RED presented prototype of Witcher. It was lighting storm. No teasers, no announcements, nothing. Just bam! We have Witcher game, we were working on it for the past few months. It is almost finished.

Polish game forums were super hot those days. And then silence again – CDProjekt was silent as a grave.

Till today. Again they dropped a bomb. Nuke, to be precise.

Witcher trailer is amazing. I knew all this artwork, cards, everything for months and still I am super excited. Great job. Information about partnership with Fantasy Flight Games immediately puts Witcher as one of most discussed games of 2014. This is scale like no other game from Poland ever had.

My flirt with FFG has a history. In 2009 I signed a contract for English edition of Witchcraft, but after few months it was canceled because of changes at FFG (even though the game was almost in print). The same year we were discussing Stronghold. This time again no happy end. FFG decided that game has too strong euro feeling, not enough ameritrash. That’s how Stronghold got published by Valley Games.  When Rafal Jaki from CDProjekt told me few months ago that there are negotiations with FFG, I had no big hopes.

But this time I was lucky. Witcher is going worlwide. With a huge 'W’

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

I strongly believe that good board game is the one that tells a good story. You play it and suddenly you are sucked into it, you feel chills on the skin. Emotions grow. In a moment you defend castle. You hear roar of warriors. You smell boiling oil. You are into it. That's how I design my games. I always want to tell a good story. I want players to be into it. As deep as possible.
