Watch out for the telepaths!

11 AM, according to the plan I’m having a short break for a cup of delicious coffee while working on a short text about the new edition of Witchcraft. A couple of completely new versions of the game lay in front of me on the table, next there are two secret projects for 2015, opposite them new add-ons for both Theseus and Hex.

I receive an email. I read it and all of a sudden the coffee is no longer delicious.

Today won’t be about Witchcraft.

Some time ago Ignacy wrote how you should always finish your game projects as soon as possible because even a small delay might cause it to be too late. Someone will do it before you. He or she will design an almost identical game and show it to the world first. All you can do then is throw your project into the trash.

It’s not hard to become paranoid in this business. We constantly have these threats hanging above our heads: “move it man or it will be too late!”.

Such was the email I got from Ignacy.

Subject: „”
Content: „I think someone already came up with your game.” And a link.

As you can imagine I felt my heart jumping somewhere around my throat.

Click. I start reading.

Suddenly the coffee was no longer delicious.

I followed the link that lead to a description of a co-operational sf horror, “Aliens” themed game that is being developed. Just what I’ve been working on for the last few months. Maybe it’s just a coincidence of theme and genre? Maybe Ignacy made a mistake? I read on…

The game begins in medias res, oops. Each player takes control of one of the crew members, has his hidden goal that is or isn’t the same as the ones possessed by others. The crew searches the ship, repairs the damage, avoids encounters with aliens. Instead of aliens there are markers indicating that something might be ‘over there!’– movement in the darkness, murmurs. The monsters have their own card and development and breeding mechanics. In the game we’ve got escape pods, self destruction systems, we can barricade the door, research alien remains, secure samples, use special ventilation shafts, negotiate with other players. And so on…

Oh well. I read till the end. EVERTHING is the same.

First thought: someone really did design my game. Not a very pleasant feeling.

Then a moment of clarity. Alright, let’s have another look at this description. Carefully, sentence after sentence, board game photos and then work-in-progress game components.

The longer I looked into it the more differences I spotted. But my feelings were still mixed.

Not long ago I wrote about how I design games that I would like to play myself. Only because nobody else designed them. So if somebody is designing my dream game why do I have this unpleasant feeling? Why do I keep looking for differences and similarities with a growing nervousness? And inside I pray that this other game would be totally different than mine?

Have I lied in the earlier entry?

Well, no. I didn’t. There is a difference when you find your dream game BEFORE you spend half a year of hard work and AFTER you do it, am I right? I sacrificed a huge amount of my time and energy on this game. I honestly pray that these two games will be totally different.

I know that maybe all those similar or identical elements are just a small part of both of these games and the thing that is most important might still be different. I am aware how small a part of my game all these similarities are those, that have turned my coffee into a mug of undrinkable mud. These are just a dozen or so pieces in a box that will contain more than a hundred.

Maybe there is additional work ahead of me to change my game in many places. Maybe I will have to throw out a bigger part of the mechanics as I will be the second in line. Tough luck, I’m ready. I still have some time for this and I plan to finish this project until 2015.

Finally I look at the pile of my game materials, on the board, the tokens, the notes and the cards. I look on the codex of the project, describing the most important assumptions to be put to life. This is the essence of the game. This codex is the quintessence of the character of the gameplay. If the games were to be identical they would also have to have identical foundations, identical proportions of adventure and tactics, simplicity and complexity, horror and heroism – and so on. The author would have to have the same expectations from his game as I have from mine. If this would be the case than I have a clone, I can relax and throw all my work to trash. From then on I would buy only this guy’s games.

One thing remains. Do I still remember why I started to make this game in the first place?

Why? Because I love this theme. Claustrophobic sf horror – my favorite genre since… forever. Instead of ripping through hordes of aliens – you sneak through dark corridors, check each spot of the spaceship with fear hanging in the air, listen to every screech of the metal floor. You check out the monitoring. You research samples. You don’t trust your fellow crewman. It’s a small territory with limited resources, unknown danger and no hope for escape.

On my list of all time favorite movies there are two hundred claustrophobic sf horrors.

So since someone else is designing a game in a similar mood – can I not see this person as a soulmate? He has similar taste and views on games. All I can do is to keep my fingers crossed for his game and as soon as it’s out, buy it because it seems that it’s what I’ve always wanted to play!

What is left for me alone is to make a completely different game – however I already know the games will share quite a few mechanisms – it has to be the best adventure, claustrophobic sf horror game that anyone can imagine.

Then all that I will have left to do is to finish Space Scream – role-playing game in an almost identical setting.

Half an hour passed. My morning coffee time is over and so are my doubts and temporary confusion. I’m going back to work because the goal is clear.

Disgrace

I try to play as much as I can. I do play because I like games, I do play because I am vulnerable to hype, I do play because I love to see new great ideas from other designers.

Of course, for most of the time I need to play my own prototypes and it takes a lot of time, I have not enough time to play games published by other designers. I do my best, but still, it is damn hard to catch up with all those great games published every year.

Yesterday I was writing about great games of 2013. Today I want to write about great – so it seems! – games of 2013 that I did not play yet. My disgrace list consist of games that were not on my radar, games I haven’t played, games I have nothing about:

  • Battle for souls,
  • Serpent’s Tongue,
  • Targi,
  • Pax Porfiriana
  • Sushi Go!
  • La Boca

I know nothing, literally nothing about these games. How on Earth this is possible that these titles missed my radar? Have you played them? Any recommendations? 🙂

A very good company

Without a doubt you saw nominations for Golden Geek Awards. I wrote about this awards in one of my recent posts – basically this is you, this is you gamers giving us, designers and publishers your vote. You choose what you liked most. This is vox populi. I love it.

I looked at nominated games and woow, so many great games!

Board Game: 2-Player Game – look at these titles! BattleCON: Devastation of Indines is one of the games Tom Vasel was raving about for many months, super fun street fighter type game. I have it on my shelf, I will play it in a few days. I can’t wait. BattleLore (second edition). Do I need say anything more? New BattleLore. This is a game! The Duke – one of highlights of Gen Con 2013, I was really dreaming about this game but price was a little bit too high for me, but I know it is an amazing game and I know, one day I will buy it. Le havre for two. Brillant. Mage Wars – I wrote a dedicated post to Mage Wars few months ago. What a game! Polis, super board game from Spain, I am eager to play it, I heard so much good stuff about this title. Star Wars X-Wing (yes, Sam Healey you see that? Two player game. 2 not 3 ;), pure awesomeness, with cool models, simple rules and super fun game play. And this is only half of this. Can you believe it? All those games published in the last few months.

or let’s look at card games:

Board Game: Card Game – Let me begin with Love Letter, small game that changed our hobby, began new trend, opened whole new category of games. This is a game that make a revolution in our hobby! And I love it and my Merry love it and I can’t say enough good words about this mini game. On the other hand, Mike Selinker’s Pathfinder. What a box! I will play it tomorrow, but even though I haven’t played it yet, there is no doubt – this is great title. The one that will be played and played over many years.  Smash Up for those who like pure fun, Bruges for those who hate theme in games 😉 Legendary, Mage Wars…

Category that blows my mind is Family games. I mean, this is hall of fame of our hobby. Look at this: Escape, a game that changes 10 minutes into celebration of pure fun, let me stay around table with my kids and throw dice, shout, scream and have most intense 10 minutes ever. Mice and Mystic which combines super production value with storytelling like no other. What can be better than gather around the table with family and tell a story… And we have more, we have Rampage that is super crazy, we have this little Qwixx, small game that looks not interesting, but when you start playing, you just keep rolling dice and have fun. And Tokaido with the most amazing artwork I’ve seen for years and Forbidden Desert. And Days of Wonder is back with a good title, so we can run for relics…

Is our hobby innovative? Oh, man, look at this category! Escape and Space Duel with real time dice rolling, Love letter with a game that consist of only 16 cards,  Pathfinder that manages to put RPG into cards (I will play tomorrow, I will play tomorrow, I will play tomorrow), and last but not least, Terra Mystica with bringing euro-boring-experience onto highest ever level! 😉

And this list go on, with Lewis & Clark (man, I love this game), Caverna (I bought it yesterday), Spyrium, Tzolkin, Freedom, Going, going, GONE!

I mean, when I saw this list, when I saw all those games in one place and when I understood – this is just a small part of our hobby, these amazing games are just a tip of the iceberg, just releases from one single year this blew my mind. This is whole damn IKEA Expedit bookstand full of super cool games that were published in just 12 months.

Our hobby is in a great moment. And two games that I published, Robinson Crusoe and Legacy are in a very good company. I am so proud. Thank you for putting me there.

Why wi-fi is such aproblem?!

I am not tech guy. I have constant and rather pathetic problems with computers, with GPS, with smart phone, with everything. I mean, there is no electronic device on this planet that I can use without problems. Each of this smart tech gadgets failed me someday in the past. I hate them.

But!

Even though I hate them, I know how they are important. I know that I need to use my smart phone to be in touch with my friends at Twitter, I need to be in touch with our fans at Facebook, I need my smart phone to post pics to Instagram. I use technology to be in touch with people who like my games.

The question – why the hell at every big convention there is no free wi fi?  Why I can’t tweet when I am at Gen Con and I meet cool people? Why can’t I upload photos right from the heart of Essen? Why I can’t share news on Facebook when I am at Nurnberg?

Do organizers of this events know that me, and 10 000 other bloggers would make a huge positive buzz around this event if they have free wi fi?

So my my question today is: people who run this events don’t know about this huge technology shift that has been made in the last 2 years, they don’t know that we all use smarthones and post photos and updates every damn minute to be in touch with our friends? They don’t know we need free wi fi these days?

Or for some reasons this is impossible because of technology problems. Anyone knows the reason? Anybody can explain me this mystery? Is it technology or is it people?

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

I strongly believe that good board game is the one that tells a good story. You play it and suddenly you are sucked into it, you feel chills on the skin. Emotions grow. In a moment you defend castle. You hear roar of warriors. You smell boiling oil. You are into it. That's how I design my games. I always want to tell a good story. I want players to be into it. As deep as possible.
